  • Women's Agricultural Entrepreneurship, Egypt

Promoting gender equality & sustainable agricultural businesses

Project areas: Rural development, Civil society, Environment

The Aga Khan Development Network helps farmers manage water and other natural resources more efficiently while also supporting women and youth. The Sharaka Program encourages more efficient farming techniques to increase production and trains farmers on how to increase profits from their surplus crops.

This project introduces alternative farming techniques. Because Egypt’s farmland is confined to the banks of the Nile River, chemical fertilizers are popular to increase crop production; yet chemicals pollute drinking water and damage land. The program promotes environmentally sound agriculture by encouraging the use of compost and efficient irrigation practices. It also trains farmers in crop rotation, marketing techniques and other skills vital to successfully growing and selling crops.

To support gender equality within this project, youth and women receive entrepreneurship training. Women maintain a healthy diet and make money from backyard home gardens. They also operate nurseries and lease agriculture equipment. Youth are taught how to start businesses. Investing in Aswan Governate's youth ensures that the program is sustainable now and in the future.
