HighlightsOn October 19, 2008 over 1,600 participated in the inaugural PartnershipsInAction 3k Walk in Orlando, raising over $160,000. The 3-kilometer walk at Lake Eola Park brought together families, friends, students and leaders in government, business and the arts for a day of learning activities, fundraising and culturally diverse performances. At the opening ceremony Lawson Lamar, State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida, gave the keynote address and toured the interactive exhibits on site that showcased innovative solutions for reducing poverty in Africa and Asia. State Attorney Lamar said “Everyone is gathered here in order to help others. This is about ensuring that every man, woman and child around the globe can live with dignity, hope and pride.” He continued that “It is in our best interest to tackle poverty because poverty is one of the biggest sources of instability in the world today. There would be a whole lot less conflict if we could continue to be successful and raise people up out of poverty. This fight that we are all fighting together – to raise the standard of living around the world – is the path to human dignity and world peace.” Following the 3k Walk around Lake Eola, a program of entertainment celebrated the diversity of world cultures. One of the 3k Walk’s most inspiring features was the exhibition of Global Innovations in Action, where participants of all ages had an opportunity to engage in interactive exhibits and learn how people in developing countries create innovative solutions to overcome the challenges of low income, poor health conditions and limited educational opportunities. Through displays and hands-on demonstrations, Global Innovations showcased the positive results that are achieved through the Aga Khan Foundation’s development programs. Participants took part in educational games such as the Education Obstacle Course, Rural Development Obstacle Course, and Lost Potential that introduced players to issues of life expectancy and solutions to health care used in various developing countries. By visiting the different exhibits, visitors learned how the Foundation’s programs in microfinance, oral re-hydration and education are helping those in Africa and Asia. Volunteers researched, designed and created the exhibits. Through this process, youth, in particular, gained a deeper understanding of global citizenship and social responsibility.
