New Summer Travel Blog Series

Join us in traveling around the world with our staff to learn about our development work abroad.

While many people travel in summer for fun, our staff in Washington, DC travel as part of their work to support the most vulnerable people around the world. Over the next few months, this Summer Travel blog series will follow our staff as they visit people and places in Africa and Asia.

They will report on visits to Kenya, Mali, Egypt, Afghanistan and Pakistan providing updates and insights on our programs and beneficiaries. Some are first-time visits; others are going to review progress. You can find out how AKF USA programs in health, education, rural development, civil society and the environment are helping people in challenging circumstances to become self-reliant.

Come journey around the globe with us this summer without leaving your home!

Intern Spotlight: Alisha Lalani

Alisha Lalani recently completed her nine-month Professional Development Internship with AKF USA. Alisha worked with the Programs Department identifying grant opportunities, assisting in proposal development and managing grants.

A 2010 graduate of Emory College in Atlanta where she studied Women and Global Health, Alisha engaged in both the development and management of programs and proposals. Aligned with her undergraduate work, she was excited to contribute to proposal development for a maternal and child health program grant as well as education and disaster relief grants. Alisha independently managed an USAID-funded microfinance program, the Khana Loans Initiative in Afghanistan.

For Alisha, being a part of program development "enabled me to cultivate program design and grant writing skills--essential for building strong development programs."

Learning about AKDN's wide range of activities in many different sectors all over the world is a large component of the internship program and one of Alisha's favorite. "Familiarizing myself with these activities and sectors through readings, meetings with AKDN employees, and participation in the plethora of conferences, seminars and forums DC has to offer was one of the most fascinating parts of my internship."

Alisha will be heading off to graduate school in the fall to study more about Women, Gender and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.
